Getting Organised Continues

After a lovely day on the island, it was off to collect our bikes that have been adjusted, checked and had some accessories installed. Now we are ready to tour Canada in style!

Getting Organized

Toronto Island was next on the agenda, so we set off on the ferry for a day on the beach and in the sun. We spent the day walking around the island along the shores of Lake Ontario and exploring the various activities on offer on the island.

The water proved too cold for a swim, even for Liam, but it was nice to know that if one did venture into the water, the only danger was the cold. Later research on the marine life in the lake revealed the many species of fish include bream, bass, trout and perch, but the largest predator is the pike.

The setting definitely inspired the feel of a vacation and after a 5 km walk around the island, the velvety grass underneath the large leafy trees invited even the most active of society to steal a siesta!

Some interesting facts about Lake Ontario is that it is about 85km wide and 311km long and that is the 14th largest lake in the world, but the smallest of the Great Lakes. Even with binoculars you cannot see the other side and living on it's shores gives one the impression of living on the seashore.

Getting Started

Arriving in Toronto on Tuesday 18 May 2010, the long journey begins. The first few days always consists of early mornings and early evenings as one adjusts to the time difference of 5 hours. Remarkable changes include warm and sunny weather - going from 9degrees C in Ireland to 28 degrees C in Toronto and the lovely long evenings where the sun only sets around 21h30.

The first day was spent in downtown Toronto exploring the shops, and getting bikes and camera equipment sorted out. It was interesting to discover the Toronto version of New York's Time Square and window shop at the Hudson Bay Trading Company - one of the largest and oldest stores in Canada.
