The legs were pumping again today as we did another 8km cycle along the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron. We passed some gorgeous houses along the shore that we oogled at and the cycle ended in a park where we found a painted turtle (the name of the species!) walking across the grass.
The afternoon was spent at Discovery Harbour which is an 1840’s naval base that has been recreated on the original site. The wrecks of the original ships can be seen, but life size replicas are now moored at the docks complete with ship’s captain and boat yard. We took an audio tour and learnt much about the naval life of the time and the shenanigans of the bored officers.
We enjoyed an early evening guided canoe trip through the Wye Marsh Wildlife Area in search of the elusive beaver. We did learn much about the birds and reptiles in the area, spotting many frogs, bullfrogs and turtles. We were lucky to see a family of muskrats, but the beavers remained undetected. After a lovely walk on the marsh boardwalk and through the forest, we headed back to the hotel.
