So far we have seen pretty flat scenery with many lakes and forests, so today we headed for the mountains in the Mont Tremblant area 2 hours North West of Montreal. It is a beautiful area and very popular as a ski resort in winter. We had treated ourselves to a condo for a few days complete with a gas braai, separate lounge and patio and ……. Home cooked food!
On our way to Mont Tremblant, we went via Ottawa and Montobello to see all the North American animals in the Omega Park. Here, you drive around this park which is like a small game reserve and the animals roam free although the bears, wolves and coyotes are in separate areas. As you cross the cattle grid entering the park, you are swamped by wapitis who come up to the car and slobber all over the windows sniffing for carrots that many visitors feed them. It is quite hilarious as they are tall animals and will put their whole head in the car given half a chance. But we solved the mystery of these killer wapitis – for those of you who have never heard of them they are actually elks!
Treated to sightings of bison, wild boars, white tailed deer, fallow deer, red deer, timber wolves and arctic wolves was great, but we did not find the elusive beaver although we did spot a raccoon sleeping on a bird feeder. We also spent hours watching the black bears and there were 2 little cubs that were very entertaining chasing each other and clambering up trees and over rocks. The adult bears also enjoyed walking across the water on logs and sitting up begging for food. Park visitors are not supposed to feed them, but they do.
After a picnic lunch and a walk to see more bears and wolves, we enjoyed a show of raptors and got a good look at falcons, buzzards, owls and a young bald eagle who has not yet got his white head colouring.
