Friday 3 September 2010

Starting the day at 5 degrees C, we decided to postpone activities until it had warmed up a bit. We eventually set off around lunchtime with the canoe and were taken to Rock Lake to spend a few hours exploring the area by canoe. When we arrived, the lake was glass still and clear. We could see 10m down and watched the underwater plants that looked like trees, getting taller as the lake got deeper until they disappeared into the depth.

We crossed the lake which is 90m deep while the wind was still and then headed up the west shore. There was no one in sight and the area is very remote with no other humans for miles around. Looking for the entrance of the creek (small river) entering the lake, we ended up grounded in the marsh! So we sat in the canoe and had a picnic lunch before punting out and heading across the north shore of the lake until we found the creek. By now the wind had picked up and we headed up the creek for 90 minutes upstream and into the wind. It was heavy going, but we saw a beaver swimming along and eventually turned around due to time constraints.
The it was time to enjoy the fruits of our physical exertion and we spent the next 45 minutes just floating downstream watching a little duck and enjoying the quiet wilderness. It was so peaceful and really wonderful as the wind howled through the trees. Reaching the lake it was time to gun it back to our meeting point and we pulled hard across the lake, but luckily the wind was behind us and we made good time.

Then it was a 20min hike to the viewpoint to look out over the valley and creek we paddled up. The view was breathtaking, but not an animal in sight!
