The Johnston Canyon hike in Banff National Park had been recommended by many people in all parts of Canada, so we set out to explore this gem today. The hike follows a river up a gorge and at times the walkway goes under rock overhangs or out over the river. It was really beautiful and a geographical expedition with potholes, tall cliffs and waterfalls all part of the experience. Leaving the canyon behind, we continued on through alpine forests keeping a look out for bears and singing and clapping along the way to make our presence known.

The trail ended in a beautiful alpine meadow with lots of fresh water springs welling up from underground and feeding into the river. This unusual and fascinating feature is called “The Ink Pots”. After 12km in 3 hours, we drove home through the park, tired and satisfied from another amazing Canadian outback day.
