It’s time to head for the Rockies. Leaving Edmonton today, we headed west to our next stop Hinton, which we are using as our launchpad for the Jasper area of the Rockies. It is just too expensive to stay in a resort in Jasper itself, but Hinton is only an hour away. The whole journey was spent anticipating our first glimpse of the Rockies. Eventually the snow streaked peaks came into view. Sadly, it is very cloudy today, so much of the magnificent scenery is obscured, but we have 2 weeks to spend here, so here’s hoping we get to see the splendor of the scenery.
Arriving late afternoon, we headed off to walk around the boardwalk and lake at the top of a hill overlooking the town. Disconcertingly, we soon came across posters warning of a troublesome cougar in the area. With trepidation we continued and luckily did not encounter the beast. We enjoyed the walk and the lake and marsh and saw a huge beaver dam that is more than 20 years old. It’s a mud and wood island rising out of the lake about 3m high and 15m in diameter. The area is beautiful and bordered with forested hills and the peaks of the Rockies beyond. There is so much to do in this area it is going to be difficult to choose.
