Tuesday 31 August 2010

August ends on a high note as we headed back into the Jasper National Park again. We soon spotted a wolf running across the road and a bit further down the road, saw 2 coyotes lying by the road, all fluffy with their winter coats on. We also spotted a Big Horned Sheep before arriving at the Jasper Tramway that would take us up Whistler Mountain.

Arriving at the bottom cable station we were warned that the visibility from the top was poor, but being the optimists that we are, we headed up there anyway. As the cable car disappeared into the mist, the temperature dropped from 13 degrees C to 0 degrees C. Arriving at the summit 2700m above sea level, it was snowing as we set off to explore the mountain top. Of course the snow patches on the ground provided perfect ammunition for snow balls and Liam soon had a couple of snow balls coming his way!

We wandered around in the mist and trudged up a footpath, but with the mist and unmarked path, we did not want to venture too far. From time to time, the mist would clear and we got awesome views of the valleys below and the other peaks in the area. After an hour of walking around the summit in the snow and some nice hot soup for lunch, we headed back down the mountain and off to our next destination – the Icefields.
